Welcome to Grace Notes & Brush Strokes, the Artisan Journal of Prayerfully Sent.
I am delighted to share today’s Fabric Arts story about a project that did not go perfectly but became a blessing in unexpected ways.
The Project That Did Not Go as Planned
I set out to make a protective zipper case for my mixed media glass mat. After choosing the materials for my project, I fused layers of double-sided fusible foam, quilted the fabric for durability, and carefully stitched the seams. However, I ran into a common first-time challenge: I installed the fusible foam before attaching the zipper. When I free-motion quilted the top, I encountered challenges I hadn’t anticipated. I wasn’t aware that the quilting would add extra bulk, and when I tried to insert my glass mat, it simply would not fit.
I also noticed that while I was sewing, my sewing machine and presser foot were moving inconsistently, which caused skipped stitches. I ordered a sewing machine mat and a mat for my pedal. Hopefully, these additions will help rectify the issues so I can sew comfortably and stitch straight.

The Unexpected Outcome
Rather than seeing this as a failure, I embraced the unexpected. The pouch I made was still sturdy, beautiful, and perfectly suited for other uses. When my daughter saw it, she sparkled with glee and asked if she could have it. At first, she used it as a pillowcase, but we soon realized that the padding was too much. My daughter decided to use it to store her baby doll clothes and accessories.
It is also perfect for storing art supplies, sewing and paper crafting tools, painting materials, or other studio essentials. My Darling Dove even suggested adding a handle to transform it into a large bag. I love seeing how she finds new uses and blessings in what seemed like a mistake.
What I Learned
- Zipper First, Foam Second: Installing the zipper before fusing foam avoids shrinking or bulk interference.
- Planning for Bulk: Quilting and fusible foam can add size, so allow extra room when measuring.
- Creativity Beyond Original Intent: Even if a project does not work as planned, it may have a new purpose.
Sewing—and life—often do not go perfectly according to plan. Mistakes are not obstacles; they are God’s tools to guide us toward growth, wisdom, and unforeseen blessings.

Grace Note
“But if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given him.” – James 1:5 { Legacy Standard Bible}
The Greek word for wisdom here is σοφία (sophia), emphasizing skillful understanding and discernment. If you’ve ever had a project not turn out as expected, James 1:5 offers such comfort. When we’re feeling stuck or unsure about our next steps, we can ask God for wisdom, knowing He gives it freely and without making us feel foolish for asking.
Looking Ahead
This first attempt became a learning experience that led to the properly fitting Protective Mixed Media Glass Mat Zipper Case Tutorial. For those who want to make their own functional and beautiful case, follow along in the next blog post where I share the details and reveal pictures of the project.
Closing
I hope this story encourages you to embrace imperfections and view challenges as opportunities for growth. God often turns what seems like a setback into a blessing, and creativity thrives in the unexpected.
Growing through the sometimes challenging process of learning new skills and pushing past our comfort zones allows us to discover abilities we might not have realized otherwise and to create in ways we could not have previously imagined. Whether your next project goes exactly as planned or takes an unexpected turn, remember that each stitch, each attempt, and even each “mistake” is part of your creative journey. Trust in God’s perfect timing and His ability to work all things together for good.
