Prayerfully Sent Art Studio Transformation Part 4
The Problem Every Paper Crafter Knows
If you’re a paper crafter, you know the frustration: card stock doesn’t fit neatly into standard storage solutions. Traditional drawers are too deep, desktop organizers tip over when full. For stationery designers, having a variety of colors accessible is a must.
When planning my Art Studio, we knew we needed something custom. The narrow space between our drawers was perfect real estate, but nothing store-bought would fit those exact dimensions while holding card stock vertically for easy browsing.

The Custom Solution: ClosetMaid Meets DIY Ingenuity
My husband designed a brilliant solution as a gift for my art studio, using readily available components that anyone can adapt to their space:
Materials Used:
- ClosetMaid shelving unit (white laminate finish to match our cabinets)
- Shelf pin supports (the adjustable kind with multiple hole positions)
- Hard board sheets cut to custom dimensions for our space
- Basic hardware for assembly
Why This Design Works:
Perfect Fit: Custom-sized to utilize every inch of my available space Vertical Storage: Card stock stands upright for easy browsing and selection Adjustable: Shelf pins allow me to modify spacing as my collection grows Professional Look: White finish blends seamlessly with my cabinet system Accessible: Open design means no digging through stacks
The Build Process
Planning Phase:
- Measured the space between our kitchen drawers precisely
- Calculated card stock needs – how many sheets we typically store
- Determined optimal spacing between shelves for easy access
- Selected ClosetMaid components that could be adapted to our dimensions
Assembly:
- Custom Hardboard & ClosetMaid cutting – we had the hard boards cut to our exact measurements at the hardware store and cut the ClosetMaid shelving at home for further customization
- Shelf pin installation – drilled holes for adjustable positioning
- Component assembly – combined ClosetMaid system with our custom-cut boards
- Test fitting – made sure it slid perfectly into our cabinet space
Pro tip: Depending on your space, you’ll need different measurements – that’s the beauty of this system. It’s completely customizable!

The Results: Card Stock Heaven
This custom tower fits perfectly next to my blind cabinet and between the drawer sets on my L-shaped wall – it looks like it was always meant to be there! The tower holds my entire card stock collection with room to grow. Each color is visible at a glance, and pulling out individual sheets is effortless. No more digging, no more bent corners, no more buying duplicates because we couldn’t find what we already had.
What We Love Most:
- Instant visibility of our entire color range
- Easy access without disturbing other sheets
- Space efficiency – maximizes vertical storage
- Expandable design – we can add more shelves anytime
- Professional appearance that matches our kitchen aesthetic
Adaptable for Any Space
The brilliant thing about this solution is its adaptability. Whether you have:
- A narrow gap between cabinets
- A closet corner that needs organizing
- A craft room wall that could use vertical storage
- Any awkward space that standard furniture doesn’t fit
You can modify this concept using the same basic approach: ClosetMaid components + custom-cut boards = perfectly fitted storage.
